WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A University of North Carolina Wilmington professor who said he was denied promotion because of his religious views has won his case in federal court.
Associate criminology professor Mike Adams sued in 2007, saying he was denied promotion to full professor. Adams said he was an atheist and when he converted to Christianity in 2000, his political and social views changed. He has written and appeared on broadcast programs to discuss his views.
He said the university retaliated for his views by denying him promotion in 2006 and a federal jury in Greenville decided in his favor Thursday.
The university said it disagrees with the jury decision and faculty members are promoted without regard to political or religious beliefs. The school is considering an appeal.
