LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder says he respects a ruling that Michigan’s ban against gay marriage is unconstitutional while recognizing appeals are going to be filed.
Snyder spokesman Dave Murray said Friday the case wasn’t about “LGBT” or adoption issues anymore but instead an obligation to defend state law. He says the voter-approved 2004 ban “clearly prohibits” the governor from “giving the benefits of marriage to a same-sex couple.”
Murray says Snyder takes his responsibility seriously.
Snyder says if voters decide to change the law or a court ultimately does, he’ll respect the decision and follow the law.
The Republican’s likely opponent in November, Democrat Mark Schauer, calls the ruling a “major victory for loving, committed couples across the state.” He says the state shouldn’t waste money appealing the decision.
