VIGO, Spain (AP) - Malaga improved its chances of avoiding the drop while dragging Celta Vigo into the relegation race with a 2-0 victory in the Spanish league on Friday.
Jose Camacho’s pair of first-half goals saw Malaga jump to 32 points - one behind Celta - to sit six points above 18th-place Valladolid and the relegation zone.
Duda set up Camacho’s first goal after the Portuguese winger picked up Celta goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez’s poor clearance in the 24th minute.
Camacho secured the important road win 10 minutes later after linking up with Duda again to nod a free kick home at the near post.
Malaga played the last 25 minutes with 10 men after Duda lashed out violently at Celta midfielder Rafinha to earn a straight red card.
Friday’s match opened the 29th round of games in Spain, highlighted by Sunday’s clasico between leader Real Madrid and Barcelona, which could see its chances of retaining the domestic crown reduced with a loss at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Madrid leads with 70 points, Atletico Madrid is second with 67 points before Sunday’s match at last-place Real Betis. Barcelona has 66 points.
