ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - General Motors Co.’s chief executive Mary Barra will get an honorary degree when she speaks at the University of Michigan’s spring commencement.

University spokeswoman Laura Lessnau says the school’s Board of Regents on Thursday approved earlier plans to confer the honorary doctor of engineering degree. Barra speaks May 3 at Michigan Stadium. The board also approved honorary degrees for several other people.

Barra is the first woman to head a major U.S. automaker. She’s scheduled to testify April 1 at a hearing by a House panel investigating the delayed recall of 1.6 million small GM cars. This week Barra apologized for deaths linked to the delayed recall.

The Department of Justice is investigating whether any laws were broken in the way Detroit-based GM handled the recall.
