GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) - Schalke defender Benedikt Hoewedes tore a groin muscle in the 3-1 Champions League loss to Real Madrid and will be out for several weeks.

The Bundesliga club says Hoewedes is not expected to return before May and his participation for Germany at the World Cup could be in doubt.

Schalke is third in the Bundesliga, one point behind Borussia Dortmund, and seeking to seal a place in the Champions League next season.
