HALLOWELL, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage says environmental groups’ push to pick energy “winners and losers” is getting in the way of the state’s ability to lower electricity costs.

The Republican governor’s remarks came Thursday at the Energy and Technology Council of Maine’s forum on regional energy infrastructure issues.

LePage continued to criticize the Legislature for considering restoring a rebate program for those who install solar systems and said ratepayers can’t afford to subsidize research and development projects.

LePage said it’s “appalling” that lawmakers have stalled a measure he supports to fund a program that helps Maine residents invest in modern heating equipment.

The Natural Resources Council of Maine has dismissed the governor’s criticism and says solar will help lower the state’s energy costs and help the environment.
