CLINTON, Iowa (AP) - Officials say thousands of gallons of wastewater accidentally entered the Mississippi River near the eastern Iowa city of Clinton, but it shouldn’t pose a public health threat.
The state Department of Natural Resources says a break in a force main caused 50,000 gallons of raw domestic wastewater to enter the river Tuesday evening. The break has since been repaired and workers hauled away 4,500 gallons of wastewater.
Downstream water suppliers in Davenport, Fort Madison, Burlington and Keokuk were notified of the discharge. Officials say the wastewater was not released into a public area and its dilution should not pose a threat.
DNR officials say they’re monitoring the situation.
