INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Outdoor warning sirens will be set off across Indiana as part of an annual statewide tornado drill.

Emergency management officials say two tests will be initiated Thursday by the National Weather Service as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The purpose of the test is to allow each county to check warning sirens in a simulated emergency and to provide the opportunity for businesses and schools to test their preparedness.

The first test is scheduled for 10:15 a.m., and the second test will start about 7:30 p.m. The tests will be canceled if there is severe weather.

The weather service says Indiana averages 21 tornadoes a year and had a record 72 tornadoes in 2012. The weather service says tornadoes are most likely from April to June.
