ATLANTA (AP) - A two-year struggle over changes to metropolitan Atlanta’s transit system faces a looming deadline.
The Georgia House and Senate must settle their differences on a proposed MARTA overhaul before midnight, the required end of the session. Any proposal that doesn’t pass by adjournment must start from scratch next year after a new General Assembly is elected in November.
The House and Senate generally agree on relaxing rules that force MARTA to spend half of its tax revenues on capital improvements and half on operations. MARTA officials want flexibility. Lawmakers also have agreed not to mandate any privatization of MARTA services, leaving those decisions to the agency.
But there is still no agreement on whether to grant Atlanta suburbs more influence over the MARTA governing board.
