CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - An exchange of gunfire in Corpus Christi has left two police officers wounded and a suspect who commandeered a police vehicle in critical condition.

The unidentified officers were responding Thursday afternoon to a call of a suspicious person. Shots were fired when the officers approached the man on a city street.

Police say the suspect shot one officer in the leg while the second officer was shot in the leg and also in the area of the neck and shoulder. Both were in stable condition at a Corpus Christi hospital.

The unidentified suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. But he was still able to jump into a police SUV and flee.

The vehicle a short time later struck a utility pole and the man was taken into custody.
