BANGOR, Maine (AP) - U.S. Sen. Angus King is honoring the service of a Maine Army National Guard support battalion at a meritorious unit citation ceremony in Bangor.
King commended the service and sacrifices of the 81 soldiers of the 286th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
The soldiers were deployed to the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan, transporting supplies to more than 30,000 soldiers.
King says the unit also paired up with Canadian Forces counterparts to mentor an Afghan army unit on how to provide support during combat operations.
He says the unit is a testament to an extraordinary tradition of service.
