Rachel Canning, the 18-year-old New Jersey high-schooler who left home and then sued her parents for $650 a week in support, plus college tuition, has now dropped her claim.
She made the decision after losing the first part of her suit — to seek the weekly support and ongoing private high school tuition — and returning to her Lincoln Park home. Her second hearing to win college tuition was scheduled for April. But Ms. Canning’s decided to drop that suit, CNN reported.
Superior Court Judge Peter Bogaard said her “decision to dismiss the litigation was a knowing and voluntary decision,” CNN reported.
Ms. Canning had initially stated that her parents, Sean and Elizabeth, had forced her from the home. But her parents said she left on her own accord — and simply because she didn’t want to abide by the house rules.
The case ignited national debate about the rights of children versus the rights of parents and took an especially heated turn after the judge who shot down her tuition and weekly support requests characterized her as spoiled and possessed of an entitlement nature.
