NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Norfolk-based E-2C Hawkeye squadron is reporting to a new commanding officer as it nears the end of its deployment in the Persian Gulf.
Cmdr. Przemyslaw Kaczynski became the head of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 126 during a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman this week.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/1ihInV4) that Kaczynski replaced Cmdr. John Hewitt. The Seahawks of VAW-126 flew 408 missions in support of the war in Afghanistan under Hewitt’s command.
The radar-loaded propeller planes provide airborne command and control and airborne warning during F/A-18 deployments.
The Truman and its strike group deployed in July.
It was expected to begin its return within the next few weeks but families of the sailors were told that plans might change, depending on developments in the Ukraine crisis.
