KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Fred Upton is among a number of lawmakers and others who appear in a music video that asks the federal Environmental Protection Agency to clean up a contaminated site in Kalamazoo.
The song is called “Take It Away.” It urges the EPA to rid the site in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood of 1.5 million cubic yards of soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls. It’s the former Allied Paper site.
In addition to Upton, the video features state Rep. Sean McCann, the Kalamazoo City Commission and the Big Banana Car.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Wednesday (https://bit.ly/1mh1qD4 ) the EPA is considering a range of options for the site, including capping and monitoring it, which the agency estimated would cost $36 million. Total cleanup would cost five times more.
