EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - There will be a new sheriff in Southwestern Illinois’ Madison County.

Glen Carbon Police Chief John Lakin handily defeated his former boss, Sheriff Bob Hertz, in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Lakin got 64 percent of the vote in ousting Hertz.

Fifty-four-year-old Lakin faces no Republican challenger in November’s election and is virtually assured the county’s top law enforcement job.

Sixty-four-year-old Hertz has been with the sheriff’s department since 1972 and was elected sheriff in 2002. He was seeking a fourth term.

Lakin worked with the sheriff’s department for 22 years and was a major under Hertz before leaving to become Glen Carbon’s police chief in 2011.
