CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginians are being warned about a scam involving jury duty.

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey says people are receiving phone calls from someone who claims the citizen is being fined for not responding to a jury duty notice.

Officials say the person usually calls under the guise of being a representative of a local sheriff’s department and told that if they don’t immediately pay the fine, it will increase or a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

Morrisey’s office says local county sheriff offices and circuit clerk offices have indicated that this is a scam.

Morrisey says citizens should always be concerned if they receive a call out of the blue saying they need to surrender financial information or pay a set amount to avoid legal trouble.
