Gunmen from the Shiite militant organization Hezbollah have banded together with Shiite residents to clamp down on a Sunni-majority town near the Lebanon-Syria border.
The deputy mayor of the town of Arsal, named Ahmad Fliti, told The Associated Press that Shiites bearing weapons have blocked off roads that tie the town to the rest of Lebanon and opened fired on any cars that approached. The Shiites are upset at recent rocket attacks that have been blamed on them by Sunnis, he said, in the AP report.
The biggest concern: Aid that was supposed to be on its way to the thousands of refugees from Syria who are now in Arsal will be interrupted and stolen, he said, AP report.
