WASHINGTON (AP) - Safety Brandon Meriweather is returning to the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins announced Tuesday that Meriweather has re-signed after a week of testing free agency.

Meriweather returns for a third season in Washington, playing a position the Redskins hope to upgrade. His last two years have been marred by injuries and reckless play, including head-first hits that have drawn fines and a suspension from the NFL. He started 13 games last year and had two interceptions.

Pass defense is a top offseason priority for the Redskins, but they failed to land one of the top safeties available during the first several days of free agency. Reed Doughty, who started eight games in 2013, is also a free agent.
