AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Democratic-controlled Senate has sustained Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of a bill that would direct the state to work toward creating a state-run virtual charter academy.
The Senate voted 23-12, falling short of the two-thirds support needed to override the veto.
In his veto message, LePage said he opposed the part of the bill that places a moratorium on the creation of charter schools in the state until next year. LePage it seeks to halt the opening of the Maine Connections Academy, a virtual charter school approved earlier this month by the Maine Charter School Commission.
But supporters say the moratorium is necessary to encourage Maine’s Department of Education to create a virtual academy that will benefit all Maine students.
