MIAMI (AP) - A Tampa Bay area middle school teacher is in federal custody over allegations he attempted to use Facebook to get two teens in Belize to have sex with him.
Department of Homeland Security special agents arrested 48-year-old David Wendel Thompson on Friday. According to court documents, Thompson lives in Seffner, Fla., and was flying from Tampa to Belize City. Belize refused him entry. The Department’s Homeland Security Investigations division detained Thompson during a return layover in Miami.
The complaint alleges Thompson used Facebook in February to “knowingly” set up sexual rendezvous with 13-year-old and 15-year-old girls in Belize.
Department spokesman Nestor Iglesias declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation. A phone listed in Thompson’s name was disconnected. He faces between 10 years and life in prison if convicted.
