If it were’t for God’s mercy and compassion, Bill Maher — who recently made headlines by dismissing the deity as a “psychotic mass murderer” — would be struck down, one evangelist explained.

Bryan Fischer, who works with the American Family Association, said Mr. Maher ought to consider himself lucky to be alive, after making anti-Christian comments that accused that God “drowns babies,” among other claims.

And he said, Mediaite reported: “The only reason that Bill Maher — after a tirade like that, there is absolutely only one reason why Bill Maher draws another single breath, and that is because God is merciful, God is compassionate. He is abounding in steadfast love and loving kindness …Why does God allow Bill Maher to go on these blasphemous rants? Because he is waiting for Bill Maher to come to the place of repentance.”

Mr. Fischer also said, the blog site reported, that Mr. Maher might have thought his statements were “hip and trendy and kind of cool.” But his day of reckoning is coming.

“He’s going to be judged for those careless words,” Mr. Fischer said, though “God hopes it doesn’t come to that.”
