WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A Warwick city worker is delaying the launch of his campaign against U.S. Sen. Jack Reed while he seeks a court injunction against a municipal ordinance that says he can’t keep his job if he runs.
Republican Raymond McKay, a network and communications administrator for the city of Warwick, on Monday filed for injunctive relief, saying he believes he has a right to run and the courts will agree. The ordinance prohibits “classified” employees from keeping their positions if they seek elective office.
Warwick’s personnel director last week said the department informed McKay about the ordinance when it learned he intended to run. Jane Jordan said then it was up to McKay to decide what to do.
A message was left for Jordan Monday.
Reed is a third-term Democrat.
