NEW YORK (AP) - Several hundred people, including the prime minister of Ireland, launched New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities at the historic Gracie Mansion.
Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih-BLAH’-zee-oh) honored Prime Minster Enda Kenny at a breakfast on Monday.
De Blasio said in a toast that New York is a “city of immigrants” and residents “never forget” where they came from.
Kenny congratulated de Blasio on his recent election and made a joke about the mayor’s Gaelic pronunciations.
He presented de Blasio a book containing a history of Ireland.
The mayor of the Big Apple dropped a crystal apple he was presenting to Kenny. It did not appear to break.
De Blasio and his family have not yet moved into Gracie Mansion, which is the official residence for New York City mayors.
