SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Suffolk officials say the city erroneously paid thousands of dollars in holiday overtime to firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
Chief of Staff Debbie George tells The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1p359ko ) that the overpayments cost the city about $336,000 a year for the past three years.
George says the workers were erroneously paid an extra eight hours of regular pay for each holiday worked. She says about 110 firefighters and emergency medical technicians received the overpayments each holiday.
The error has been corrected. George says the city won’t ask the workers to repay the money.
Firefighters’ union president Travis Pierce says the union is considering legal action. He says the city acted without input from his members.
