ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal says he’s ordered flags to fly at half-staff later this week to honor a former congressman and Army secretary.
Deal said in a statement that he plans to proclaim March 19 as Howard “Bo” Callaway Day in Georgia. The 86-year-old Callaway died Saturday at an assisted-living facility in Columbus of complications from a brain hemorrhage he suffered about two years ago.
Callaway was elected to Congress in 1964, becoming the first Republican congressman from Georgia since Reconstruction. He ran for governor two years later but lost.
In 1973, Callaway was appointed Secretary of the Army. From 1981 until 1987 he was chairman of the Colorado Republican Party.
Deal says Callaway helped the state’s Republican party grow dramatically and few leaders can match his impact on Georgia politics.
