RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - National Weather Service forecasters have extended a winter weather advisory that includes most of the state west of the Interstate 95 corridor.

The advisory was scheduled to expire at 7 p.m. Monday. Instead, it has been extended until noon Tuesday. It means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain could cause travel problems. Motorists are advised to use caution.

In the mountains, residents can expect areas of freezing rain, freezing drizzle, black ice and sleet. The weather service says the Triangle and counties along the border with Virginia will get a mix of freezing rain, freezing drizzle as well as snow and sleet.

A host of school systems across the state cut their days short because and canceled after-school activities because of the weather.
