COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service has no plans to reopen a popular trail in the mountains west of Colorado Springs because the potential of flash floods in the wildfire-charred area is too great.
Pike National Forest spokesman Frank Landis tells The Gazette (https://bit.ly/1gwnKQP ) he knows the Waldo Canyon Trail is popular, but “one afternoon thunderstorm there and we would have no way to evacuate all those people.” He says the trail won’t open this year, and it could be many years more before the threat of floods subsides.
Susan Davies, director of the Trails and Open Space Coalition, says the Forest Service should consider a seasonal closure during the few months of flood risk.
The trail passes through the starting point of the Waldo Canyon Fire, which burned 347 homes and killed two people in 2012.
