PHOENIX (AP) - The FBI says it stands behind an agent accused of perjury.

Lawyers for Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne and a Horne associate last week alleged that FBI agent Brian Grehoski (greh-HOW’-ski) lied during testimony in a hearing on campaign finance allegations against Horne and the associate.

FBI spokesman Manuel Johnson responds by saying investigations involving public officials are difficult and that the agency’s Phoenix division stands “firmly behind” Grehoski.

Johnson also says he’s not aware of any internal investigation against Grehoski.

Yavapai County prosecutors who are handling the campaign finance case also have defended Grehoski, saying the agent would not lie and there’s no evidence he did.

Lawyers for Horne and the associate contended that Grehoski’s testimony was contradicted by phone records, an audio reporting and another person’s testimony.
