TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A Tampa man is being charged with second-degree murder after stabbing his roommate, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office.
The Tampa Bay Times (https://bit.ly/1e7EocV ) reported that Lupello Gomez, 30, was charged Saturday. Gomez called police to the apartment he shared with Moises Alvarez-Hernandez, 50, on Feb. 24, claiming a woman had stolen his money. When police arrived, the woman had left and Gomez told officers that everything was fine. The police insisted on entering the premises, while Gomez resisted, and found Alvarez-Hernandez bleeding on the floor.
Alvarez-Hernandez had been stabbed twice, including through the heart and lung, and Gomez tried to interfere with medical help on the scene several times. Alvarez-Hernandez died at the hospital.
A woman seen running from the apartment was identified as a prostitute hired by Gomez. She told police that she did not witness the stabbing.
“We believe that it occurred immediately after she left,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
Gomez was arrested and charged with obstructing or opposing an officer without violence on the day of the stabbing. The second-degree murder charge was added after the results of forensic testing were received Saturday.
