SULPHUR, La. (AP) - Growth expectations in Sulphur are spurring the City Council and Mayor Chris Duncan to explore changes in operations of the public works department.
The American-Press reported (https://bit.ly/1eOXZN) Duncan recently introduced an ordinance for a reorganization plan that would create the position of superintendent of public works. The superintendent would oversee maintenance work, easing the load on the director of public works.
“With all of the expansion and growth that we have in the area, it is time to do a division of the public works department,” Duncan said. “We have a proposal of a superintendent of public works to help out with the actual work side so that (director of public works John Bruce) can concentrate on the paperwork side, which is dealing with the land use and other projects that are coming.”
The council is expected to vote on the proposal when it meets in April.
Councilman Randy Favre said the city should take an aggressive approach to avoid future problems as it grows.
“We better, as a city, be more proactive rather than reactive, because if we are not, we are going to find ourselves having to react in a situation at times where we just start to outgrow ourselves,” he said.
“We are going to continue to grow. Will public works be the only thing we look at? No, he said.
