HERMON, Maine (AP) - As the American Legion celebrates its 95th anniversary, the organization’s leaders in Maine are trying to reach out to younger veterans.

Thirty-seven-year-old Sam Canders joined the Hermon post two months ago and is now in a committee trying to connect with other veterans around his age. He told the Morning Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1lFYCME) that sending letters works for World War II veterans, but younger vets can be easier to reach via social media.

Maine membership in the American Legion dropped by 1,000 last year, about 700 of those were due to deaths. Total membership is about 20,500. Nationally, there are more than 2.3 million members at 14,000 posts.
