HONOLULU (AP) - Weather officials have issued a high-wind warning for much of the Hawaiian islands that will last into Sunday.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (https://bit.ly/Ot1VLT) reports that the National Weather Service is predicting northeasterly winds as strong as 30 to 45 mph through 6 p.m. Sunday.
In Kauai, the strongest winds will be focused in from the Barking Sands area to Koloa. In Oahu, the winds will hit the leeward sides of the Koolau and Waianae mountain ranges and eastern locations from Waimanalo to Mokapu.
Most of Kahoolawe, Lanai and the central valley of Maui will be affected by high winds, the weather service says. In Hawaiian coastal waters, a gale warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, with winds exceeding 40 mph.
The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management recommends that residents, among other steps, trim dead wood and weak branches from trees.
