CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Attorney General Patrick Morrisey says his office has returned about $16.5 million to West Virginia’s general fund in the last 14 months.

Morrisey says $9 million of that was returned in the last week. He says the Legislature will use that money to plug a budget gap and fund a program that enables senior and disabled residents to receive necessary health care at home rather than in a nursing home.

Unencumbered settlement funds received by the attorney general’s office are returned to the state as long as the Consumer Protection Division maintains three years of operating revenue. Morrisey says that ensures the office can educate citizens about scams and go after violators but still return money for the benefit of all West Virginians.
