CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Kwa’tre Hollingsworth scored with 3 seconds left to help Winston-Salem Prep beat East Carteret 72-71 in the Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association men’s championship game.

Mike Hughes scored 17 points on Saturday to lead the Phoenix (26-4), who won their third straight state championship. Hughes was named the game’s most valuable player for the third straight season.

Winston-Salem Prep shot 50 percent for the game, including 8-for-20 from 3-point range.

Trevor Willis scored 24 points to lead the Mariners (31-1), while Sam Johnson added 20 points.

East Carteret trailed by five late before Willis knocked down a 3-pointer at the 2:02 mark, then Johnson hit one on the ensuing possession to put the Mariners up 66-65.

Johnson hit another big 3 with 22 seconds left to give East Carteret a 71-70 lead before Hollingsworth answered with the winning basket.
