UNION, Ore. (AP) - The city council in Union, Ore., unanimously approved an ordinance that prohibits people from feeding deer, raccoon, wild turkey and other wildlife within the city limits.

Those who violate the ban that passed this week could face a citation.

The Observer newspaper reports (https://is.gd/zJwXyX ) that an increasing deer population has residents concerned about property damage and the importation of ticks that might have Lyme disease.

Others say the presence of deer makes Union more attractive to predators, and that cougars have been spotted in town.

Union is about 15 miles southeast of La Grande.
