CELINA, Ohio (AP) - Ohio’s Republican senator plans a forum on harmful algal blooms such as those that have plagued its largest inland lake.
Sen. Rob Portman of the Cincinnati area will be in Celina (Suh-LEYE’-nuh) in northwest Ohio Saturday for the discussion with state and local officials, farm representatives and environmental experts. The forum is at the Wright State University Lake campus beginning at 10 a.m. EDT.
Efforts to clean up Grand Lake St. Marys in western Ohio date back several years. A toxic algae bloom in 2010 hurt the region’s tourism and highlighted problems from farm phosphorous runoff.
Portman has pushed for increased attention to combating algal blooms in the Great Lakes and other freshwater bodies around the Ohio and nation.
Portman also has events Saturday in Kenton and Marion.
