NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Bill de Blasio has appointed Kathryn Garcia as the city’s Department of Sanitation commissioner.

Garcia is currently the chief operating officer at the city’s Department of Environmental Protection. She has developed and managed the department’s performance program and crisis management plans.

The sanitation department has been pummeled by a long and snowy winter this year.

De Blasio says Gracia will be tasked with keeping the city streets clean and safe.

Garcia attended the city’s Stuyvesant High School and lives in Brooklyn with her family.
