AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine is getting $1.7 million to help improve the state’s lowest-performing schools.

The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday that Maine is one of 10 states getting part of the more than $95 million in school improvement grants the department is handing out this year.

The department says the grants will go to the state education agencies, which will then determine which schools need the funds the most. The funds are designed to boost student achievement in schools where students are persistently performing poorly.
