DETROIT (AP) - James Stewart won the AMA Supercross race Saturday night at Ford Field to tie Ricky Carmichael for second place on the career victory list with 48.

Stewart, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider from Haines City, Fla., has three victories this season.

“The track was slippery tonight, so it was easy to put your bike on the ground,” Stewart said. “I pulled a nice gap in the middle of the race, but I let it go as time went on. It has been a while since I have raced here in Detroit, and it was an awesome night.”

Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto was second, followed by KTM riders Ryan Dungey and Andrew Short. Villopoto leads the season standings, 30 points ahead of Dungey. Stewart is third, 49 points back.

“I was able to get a good start tonight,” Villopoto said. “I made a mistake down the start straight, but did regroup. It wasn’t enough, but I walked away with the points lead as we head into Toronto next weekend.”

Earlier, Adam Cianciarulo raced to his third Eastern Regional 250SX Class victory in five events this season. Cianciarulo, the 17-year-old Kawasaki rider from Port Orange, Fla., held off Honda’s Justin Bogle.

“This year has started off great,” Cianciarulo said. “This was a very nerve-racking race for me because if I made one mistake, I would have given the race away. Overall, it was a great race, but it is only the fifth stop of the season, and there is a lot of racing left.”

Cianciarulo extended his points lead to 17 points over teammate Martin Davalos.
