IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa City Community School District plans to eliminate 35 teacher positions and at least one administrator position for the upcoming school year as it looks to cut spending.
The district intends to reduce staff positions by not filling open spots after teachers and staff retire, Superintendent Stephen Murley told the Iowa City Press-Citizen (https://icp-c.com/1fzh3gA ). Murley said 47 teachers already have announced plans to retire after the upcoming school year, and some staff resignations are expected before June.
However, he said, it’s still possible the district may need to lay off some teachers in its plan to cut $3.6 million in spending, required by a state spending mandate.
District officials will know more about whether layoffs are necessary after they determine which grade levels and subject areas will see staff reductions.
“It’s a question you can’t answer until you get to the end,” Murley said.
District officials are also looking at possible staff layoffs, he said.
“That’s in every category, from custodians to paraprofessionals to secretaries to administrators to teachers,” Murley said. “In some of those categories, we have more than we need.”
Currently, the district employs about 970 teachers among its 2,000 employees overall.
