MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s governor and most of the state’s city mayors are urging the Food and Drug Administration to withdraw its approval of a powerful painkiller.
The group sent a letter to the FDA commissioner Friday saying Zohydro extended release is likely to exacerbate the drug abuse epidemic facing Vermont and the nation.
They say Vermont and many other states are battling an opiate and heroin addiction crisis and “doing everything within our power to prevent and treat the dangerous disease of addiction, and strengthen laws to keep these sometimes deadly drugs out of our communities.”
U.S. Rep. Peter Welch and House members in Maine and New Hampshire also have sent a letter urging the FDA to reconsider its approval unless the drug is available in a tamper-resistant form.
