JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The Alaska Senate Education Committee plans to hear three bills, including Gov. Sean Parnell’s omnibus education bill.

Beside Parnell’s Senate Bill 139, bills proposing to raise boarding-school stipends and establishing a grant program for correspondence studies will are set for review Friday.

A per-student allocation provision in Parnell’s bill is being considered by the Senate Finance Committee at a later date.

Education Committee Chairman Gary Stevens of Kodiak asked for an opinion from the state Department of Law during an earlier review of Senate Bill 100 that would create a grant program for correspondence studies to be administered by the Association of Alaska School Boards.

Stevens questions the constitutionality of not listing the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in a supervisory role for administering the grants.
