MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The probate court in Mobile wants to raise its prices and use the money to preserve deteriorating microfilm records.

Probate Court Judge Don Davis told WKRG-TV that the court system’s microfilm records are wearing away. The machines used to read the film are no longer available.

Davis has asked Alabama’s legislature to increase the cost of recording documents in the court from $2 to $5. He said the extra money would allow the court system to save the microfilm records digitally. If the Legislature does not approve the request, Davis said the court may charge a usage fee to access information on its website.
