BOSTON (AP) - The MBTA says the driver of a Green Line train that derailed in Boston on Monday was speeding and neglected required signals.
Joe Pesaturo, spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, said Friday the finding was made after investigators ruled out any mechanical problems. He said there was no indication that the driver was on a cellphone.
The trolley went off the track and struck a wall. The driver of another train behind it slammed on the brakes to avoid a collision. Boston emergency crews reported 10 people including the derailed train’s driver were sent to the hospital complaining of back pain. No serious injuries were reported.
The MBTA plans to tighten its minimum requirements for train and bus operators in the upcoming weeks.
A message was left Friday with the drivers’ union.
