A father in the Houston area shot and killed a teenage boy, 17, after he found him in his daughter’s bedroom in the middle of the night and she denied knowing who he was.

After the shooting, which took place around 2:30 a.m., the girl then admitted she knew the boy, Fox News reported.

The father has not been identified. But Houston media reported that one of his other children told him that someone was in his 16-year-old daughter’s room, so he grabbed a gun to investigate.

He opened the bedroom door and asked the teen to identify himself, police said, Fox News reported. The girl, meanwhile, said to her father that she didn’t know him. The boy refused to give his name and instead reportedly reached for something, police said. That’s when the father opened fire and killed the boy.

After, the daughter told her father she did know the boy, Fox News said.

“You just feel terrible for the families,” a neighbor said, to a local media outlet, MyFoxHouston.com. “You just kind of reflect on both of these families’ lives have changed forever.”

Police didn’t make any arrests, but say they may turn the case over to a grand jury.
