FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - Fort Knox will become home to an Army engineering company by July.

The 541st Sapper Company, made up of about 100 Soldiers, is scheduled to be relocated from Bamberg, Germany to Fort Knox.

The unit’s Soldiers serve primarily as combat engineers, meaning they will conduct tasks including the construction of fighting positions, obstacles, and defensive positions; placing and detonating explosives; route clearance; and detecting mines visually or with mine detectors.

The unit will fall under the 19th Engineer Battalion at the post, making the battalion the largest engineer battalion in the Army at about 950 Soldiers.

About 250 family members are expected to join soldiers from the new company.

Fort Knox is preparing for the deactivation of its lone combat unit, the 3rd Combat Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.
