COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Columbia is celebrating a look back at the city’s place in civil rights history.
Nine historical markers were unveiled Friday in downtown Columbia. The signs include images and information about sit-ins, marches and legal cases that took place in Columbia during the civil rights era.
The markers are part of an effort to showcase the role that South Carolina’s capital city played in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Other events have included showings of movies about the era and a photography show. A traveling exhibition with information on happenings from other southern cities also stopped in Columbia.
Officials including state Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal attended the unveiling and a walking tour of the markers.
