BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Barbourville City Council members have chosen an interim mayor.
WYMT-TV (https://bit.ly/1kQPlnA) reports City Councilman Darren West was tapped on Thursday to take over the position.
The vote came days after the panel voted unanimously to remove Mayor David Thompson, who took office in 2007. Officials in the southeastern Kentucky city cited the results of a state audit that found several poor financial practices since Thompson took office.
Thompson’s attorney, Billy Taylor, has said his client didn’t have enough time to prepare for the hearing this week at which the council voted to oust him and would appeal the decision.
Thompson has said the auditor’s recommendations to improve the city’s financial practices have already been put into place.
