LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles zoning official has denied a beer and wine permit for a restaurant planned at a Skid Row apartment complex that houses recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.
The Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/1gjtAor ) reports Associate Zoning Administrator Maya Zaitzevsky ruled Thursday that the permit “would be detrimental to the welfare” of some residents of the New Genesis Apartments.
The decision can be appealed.
The Skid Row Housing Trust, which runs the 106-unit facility, had argued the permit was crucial to the financial health of the complex. Trust officials did not immediately comment on the ruling.
The apartments are rented to artists and low-income people as well as the homeless, who receive counseling and substance abuse treatment on the site.
The 5th and Main street area is undergoing gentrification.
