SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan branch of the American Civil Liberties Union is asking federal authorities to reconsider a decision to stay out of the fatal shooting of a homeless man in Saginaw.
The government won’t file charges against Saginaw police officers because it says it found no willful, illegal conduct. Police say Milton Hall refused to drop a knife before officers fired more than 40 shots, striking him 11 times, in public in 2012. Video shows him collapsing from gunfire.
Mark Fancher of the ACLU says Hall’s right to be free of unreasonable force was violated. He sent a letter this week to U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade. An email seeking comment was sent to her office Friday.
Three officers were disciplined for violating police policies at the scene.
